Warning is the Reckoning

In response to the UNSW Grand Challenge on Climate Change, I developed a dynamic visual narrative for an experimental postcard series. Typographically driven, the story focuses on the idea that our Earth is a responsive force, warning us that the devastation we inflict is not passively received, but instead has dire consequences. For the reckoning unleashed through natural disasters, is not an uncontrollable cry of anger, but one of Mother nature's many warnings.

The core visual features, including my original typeface, and handprinted textures were further realised through the collaborative dystopian publication 'Reckoning'. Where we utilised satirical nuances to forebodingly chronicle humanities' destruction of the environment.

Postcard Series

Typographically driven, the project explores idea that our Earth is a responsive force, warning us that the devastation we inflict is not passively received, but instead has dire consequences. For the reckoning unleashed through natural disasters, is not an uncontrollable cry of anger, but one of Mother nature's many warnings.

The postcards present two complimentary visual narratives of the natural disasters: fire and drought. Each element manually produced, so to stay connected to the physical natural world depicted.

Prints

The core visual features of the original matchstick font, fire symbols and textures all created through lino-printing techniques, become the core visual inspiration for the collaborative publication design.

Original Typography

Matchstick Font:
The original typeface was made through lino-printing techniques from two variations of burnt matchstick silhouettes. The finalised font is an adaptation of my original matchstick font to correspond to Balboa Plus - the main title font for the first half of the publication, allowing for a seamless transition

Pipe Font:
I created this original typeface using lino-printing techniques, the font mimics the shape and connections of pipes so to support the visual narrative of the drought postcard series.

Reckoning Publication

The publication 'Reckoning' takes the target market through the devastating narrative of three primary natural disasters transforming it into a dystopian reality. Utilising research findings, the issue explores the psychology behind climate change. The dystopian take on the issue explores issues of capitalism, sustainability and the power of nature.

I was responsible for the visual narrative structure of the issue, which is separated into two parts. The first half chronicles the known progression of the climate disaster. As the pages slowly burn, the Reckoning page signifies the middle spread and shift into dystopian reality, which contains mirrored aftermath effects of the fore-mentioned warnings and predictions.

We established the visual metaphor through the contents page timeline, that foreshadows the narrative structure of our publication.
