The experimental visual book explores the issue of disconnected living within the communal space' 'Paradise Court'. The obvious contrast between the utopian connotations of the apartment name and the outdated cold attributes of the building is the driving idea behind the publication.

Whilst capturing the true atmosphere of the space, the irony of having a lack of community within a physical community is emphasised through various juxtaposing elements, including form, colour, composition, type and copy.

Unique Form

The conventional form of the book was challenged with differing page shapes so to translate the disjointed nature of the community and have unconventional visual narratives simultaneously displayed.

The elongated shape of the book was selected as it is the exact dimensions of the doors in the building. The contrasting page sizes not only emphasise the disconnection between the lives residing in the space but allow for a clear categorisation of the different page types, inclusive of core symbols of stairs and doors, as well as 'profile cards' of community members.

Photography

The photography is a driving force in the book. Space, form and perspective are used to demonstrate the emotional and intellectual disconnected within the community. Ironically the physical communal space is the means of representing that disconnect a binding factor that unities the building.

Colour Narrative

The narrative of the book from one of warming curiousity to isolating coolness is assisted through a subtle tonal progression of warmer purple tones to almost purely blue tones.

The colour hues were naturally created through daylight reflecting and inspired the colour story of the publication.

Cover

The front cover was created from acrylic, the contrasting fonts were emphasised through manual melting inscription of 'paradise' and laser cutting of 'court'. The title is the same as the name of the apartment building and inspired the contrasting tone present throughout the book.
